ZRP Should Open the Rape Reporting Platform to All, Not Only Magaya’s Victims.

Dear Zimbabwe Republic Police

We have all heard the heartbreaking stories of girls raped by those they should have trusted most – their fathers, uncles, brothers, or even grandfathers. Zimbabwe has been plagued by a culture of silence and impunity, with many cases of sexual abuse going unreported. It’s encouraging to see the Zimbabwe Republic Police take a stand against this scourge, as demonstrated by the recent case of Prophet Walter Magaya.

The ZRP’s decision to open a platform for victims to report their cases is a significant step towards justice and accountability. However, we urge the police to expand this platform to allow all survivors of rape and sexual abuse to come forward and seek justice. Sexual violence remains a pervasive problem in Zimbabwe, affecting countless women, girls, and even men, who often have nowhere to turn for help.

The ZRP’s initiative could mark the beginning of a new era in the fight against sexual violence, one where victims are no longer silenced by fear, shame, or intimidation. We commend the police for embracing technology and announcing dedicated reporting platforms, including mobile and WhatsApp hotlines, for victims to report their cases.

We encourage the ZRP to continue strengthening public trust by ensuring that all reports are handled with confidentiality, empathy, and fairness. The police should also leverage Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and social media platforms to reach more victims, especially those in remote areas.

This is an opportunity to create a Zimbabwean version of the #MeToo movement, where survivors can safely share their experiences and hold perpetrators accountable. Let’s work together to build a safer Zimbabwe for everyone.

If you have been raped or sexually abused, please report your case. Do not suffer in silence. Justice begins when you speak out.

Sincerely,

Engineer Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi
