Two Appear in Court Over ZiG1 Million Dagga Seizure in Bulawayo
Two suspected drug dealers from Bulawayo have appeared in court after being allegedly found in possession of 37 kilogrammes of dagga valued at more than ZiG1 million.Lucias Moyo (55), of Rangemore, and Musawenkosi Donga (30), of Nketa 9 suburb, appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Mr Pasipanodya Maturure facing charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs.
The pair was remanded in custody to December 31 pending trial.
The State alleges that on December 15 at around 4pm, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit in Bulawayo received information that Donga had received a consignment of dagga, which he allegedly delivered to Moyo’s residence for storage.
Acting on the tip-off, detectives proceeded to Moyo’s house, where a search led to the recovery of 76 plastic packets containing loose dagga from one of the bedrooms. Subsequent investigations implicated Donga, resulting in his arrest.
On December 16, the recovered substance was weighed at Zimpost in Bulawayo in the presence of both accused persons and was confirmed to weigh 37 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of ZiG1 110 000.
Zimbabwe has in recent years recorded a rise in drug-related offences, particularly involving dagga and other dangerous substances such as methamphetamine, commonly known as mutoriro.
Law enforcement agencies have expressed concern over the impact of drug abuse and trafficking on communities, citing links to increased crime, health challenges and social decay.
Police have since intensified nationwide operations targeting drug dealers and supply networks, while urging members of the public to provide information that can assist in dismantling drug syndicates.
